<p>On many occasions, we have systems exposed to electrical weather conditions, such as nearby lightning strikes, or simply surges or overcurrents that can be induced into the main line due to the switching of nearby electrical circuits by means of an antenna or any other conductive element.</p>



<p class="has-text-align-left">Unwanted spurious signals are not always generated by extraordinary elements, but can be caused by everyday elements such as the operation of electric motors or low-frequency electrical systems. The proximity of these interferences to our equipment can cause unwanted transients to penetrate our circuit and cause damage.

<p>An overvoltage or overcurrent in an unprotected system can cause it to momentarily cease to function. In the worst case, it can completely ruin an electronic system, not only causing serious damage to its structure, but also interruption of service, damage to software or loss of data, among many others.</p>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">To minimise the impact of these unwanted signals on our equipment, <em>ALFA’R has a family of arrester products that protect equipment from such interference.</em></blockquote>



<p>ALFA’R surge and overcurrent arresters are constructed by means of a gas element, consisting of a diversion to ground of the active element which is only activated at the moment when such an unwanted high current or voltage transient occurs.</p>



<h2 class="has-text-align-left wp-block-heading">Gas discharge technology</h2>

<p>They are manufactured with gas discharge technology. The gas discharge tube consists of two electrodes enclosed in a completely sealed ceramic tube in which a mixture of noble gases suitable for effective operation is introduced. When this unwanted signal appears, the gas ionises, becoming sensitively conductive and diverting the unwanted signal to ground. The upward slope of the transient is usually very high (a few µs) and the downward slope is slow, of around hundreds of µs. Therefore, the ionisation of the gas must be fast in order to achieve a fast bypass that does not affect the circuit beyond the protective element.</p>

<p>The great advantage of ALFA’R devices is that, once the oversignal has disappeared, the gas quickly returns to its original state so that the diversion to ground disappears with a resistance of tens of GΩ, without affecting the normal operation of the installation in any way, and the signal is transferred unaltered to its destination.</p>



<p>The useful life of the discharge tube allows for a multitude of diversion manoeuvres. It is only rendered inoperative if the breakdown voltage or breakdown current is exceeded, e.g. in the event of a lightning strike directly on the device. In this case, it can be replaced by a new one, which can be purchased as a spare part. With a simple maintenance procedure, in a few minutes the device is operational again.</p>



<p>They are passive elements that do not require any power supply and can be installed in vehicles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The design</h2>

<p>Special care has been taken in the design so that, in normal operation, they can maintain the characteristic impedance, normally at 50 Ω, and thus be used at high frequencies without a significant increase in the VSWR or insertion loss.</p>



<p>There are available versions for coaxial connectors of the 7/16, N, TNC, BNC, UHF or F series, among others, with male or female connectors.</p>



<p>The earth connection is made by means of an M8 threaded connection to the chassis.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner">We have all heard about the impending 5G technology, although most of us have not yet been able to experience it in its full power. Forecasts indicate that by 2025 at least 20% of all mobile connections will be through 5G. The possibilities that we will have when this technology is widely implemented will be enormous. Data is transferred at high speed, latency times will be less than 1 ms, network capacity and spectral efficiency will be enormous. Making a truly functional and rewarding Internet of Things (IoT) a reality.

In pre-5G technologies, base stations transmit in all directions simultaneously. This fact is not very efficient due to the amount of energy wasted. In 5G it is transmitted in multiple beams through the multi-user MIMO system (Multiple Inputs, Multiple Outputs), it is transmitted more efficiently, with less power consumption and considerably expanding the bandwidth. Another very important aspect is to conveniently separate the multiple signals so that there is no interference between them or unwanted effects such as Jitter.

To meet all these expectations, an adequate physical support is necessary, in electronic systems, wiring and connectors. These must be up to par to meet the required quality of service. To meet all these needs, at <strong>ALFA’R we have prepared ourselves, developing various families of connectors for data with 5G technology</strong>, in various applications: where necessary latency times imperceptible to the user. In this way we offer a broad implementation in terms of connectivity for the growing demand for digital communications in the coming decades.

Our range of High Speed (VA) connectors is integrated in the different cases solving electrical and mechanical problems and guaranteeing the reliability and durability of the products.We must not lose sight of the fact that these are professional connectors with intensive use and high quality standards.

In addition, these connectors are versatile and must, in some cases, coexist with signals of another nature such as power signals, Optical Fiber, Radio Frequency, in industrial environments with fluids, etc&#8230; at ALFA’R, the integration of all types of signals for the creation of complete solutions in terms of connectivity has always been a priority, and today High Speed (AV) data should not be an exception.</div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner">For the design of a reliable and quality connector, all the classical radio frequency (RF) network theory has been taken into account. We have thoroughly re-studied analogue network theory and extrapolated it to digital signals, the analogy is very palpable. We found that the same problems that were had, in its day, in the development of RF technology, as the frequency increased and the problem derived from interference, is very similar to the problem, today, for signals with bits.<br>

The solutions in some cases are similar, as in the case of shields to avoid interference or exactitude in achieving a transmission where return losses are minimized. For this, the definition and stability in the entire transmission chain of the characteristic impedance is basic.<br>

In other cases they differ, such as, for example, in the support of coaxial lines in the analogue case or parallel lines or twisted pairs in the digital case. Also the powers have nothing to do with it. While in classical radio the powers could be high, in digital data transmission the powers are very small, which simplifies the development of such technology.<br>

This development has experimented with various distributions of the contacts and their shields; and different support materials in order to obtain an excellent connector suitable for High Speed data. Which must achieve the best results in three pillars: its electrical behaviour; mechanic; security and environment.<br>

At an electrical level, we have studied and optimized its behaviour in 4 measures:<br>

Constant and adapted characteristic impedance, measured through reflectometry in the TDR time domain, and minimization of Return Loss RL, Insertion Loss IL, and crosstalk between channels.<br>

Depending on the degree of shielding between pairs required, we offer solutions with the distributions shown:</div>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner">Another decisive element when choosing the material has been that it complies with UL safety regulations, and more specifically in flammability, a very important safety parameter required by the current market. We have imposed that it complies with UL 94 V0, Fire extinguishes in 10 seconds without dripping, which is the most restrictive for plastic materials.

In addition, it has been decisive that the chosen material must have variability, stability of the dielectric constant with atmospheric variables (pressure, temperature, humidity, etc &#8230;), and with the frequency or speed of data transmission.</div>

<p>Every industrial connectors manufacturer has had the same problem, which ends up becoming our enemy: the connectors’ wear and tear, specifically by the female connector. This is why it’s crucial to preserve the structural integrity of the connector parts in the long term. We present a solution for it below.<span style="font-size: 16px;"> </span></p>

<p>One of the main crucial points for the connectors is the pressure between them during the insertion, in order to allow a constant and quality connection.<span style="font-size: 16px;"> </span></p>

<p>The problem is that this aspect is the one that most easily yields to wear. For this reason, from ALFA&#8217;R we want to implement our high-quality technology to facilitate a more durable and efficient connector to our users.<span style="font-size: 16px;"> </span></p>

<p>We believe it’s necessary to solve this problem, as we want to prevent the dangerous consequences of a failing connector. For example, what the connector transmits is electrical current and this transmission can cause sparks that lead to a fire. <p>Three years ago, we developed our innovative Torsion Segment System, or TSS, for the Ø1.5 and the Ø3 diameter of contact. Today, by popular request, we implement this system for the Ø1 connectors.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Torsion Segment System</h2>

<p>We set out to create a new connecting system between male and female pieces, safer and more efficient, that would prevent false connections and contact problems. This was how the TSS system was born. It offers a complete connection, with a full-surface contact, providing total safety against false contacts. This results in a smooth, continuous and efficient connection, with no type of roughness or hard spots, that also improves the previous male/female pin connections.</p>

<p>Of course, the TSS system carries our <strong>quality and durability warranty </strong>and ensures over 500.000 insertions without showing any signs of wear or pressure loss that could cause the product to lose effectiveness.</p>

<p>Improves contact surface with minimal space, being able to increase the current with the same size of a conventional pin.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">TSS for 1mm contacts</h2>

<p>We have received a considerable number of good reviews from our clients with regards to our TSS system, but also plenty of requests to implement it for smaller connectors. And today we make that a reality.</p>

<p>Our multicontact circular connectors with 22 and 37 pins now carry the most efficient connecting system on the market, our TSS. Furthermore, we use in their making a silicone insulator to ensure they can withstand high temperatures, chemical agents and even severe weather conditions.</p>

<p>Besides, our new connectors are provided with an extra grip surface on both the male and female pins for greater adherence of the pins in the insulator in order to avoid their displacement or rotation in any circumstance. </p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Solar panels are always installed outdoors, often under the most adverse weather conditions. They are subject to high temperature contrast, humidity, condensation, saltpetre, UV radiation and much more. For this reason, the requirements for their installation and maintenance are based on the need for reliability, durability, and the highest possible quality.</p>



<p><strong>Connectors are a fundamental element in the correct functioning of the entire plant and all the following considerations must be taken into account.</strong></p>



<p><strong>A solar panel, as an electrical installation, can be connected in series, parallel or mixed circuits, depending on the requirements for each system and whether there is a need to increase voltage, intensity, or both.</strong><strong></strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Legal requirements for connectors following IEC62852:2014 and UL6703</h2>



<ol class="wp-block-list"><li>Configuration. Connectors must be polarized and configured in such a manner that they are not interchangeable with other contacts in the same system nor in other electrical systems within the same building.</li><li>Protection. Connectors must be built in such a manner that they protect people from accidental contact with active parts.</li><li>Secure system. Connectors must be either hitch or safety type. They cannot require tools for connecting, but tools must be needed for disconnecting them.</li></ol>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Types of connectors</h2>



<p>Solar installations are very diverse. From a home setup to the big industrial or photovoltaic parks, each installation has its own requirements regarding voltage and intensity, ranging from dozens to several hundred amps. Each individual installation will need a certain type of connector according to its requirements.</p>

<p>These <strong>RF coaxials operate at 50 and 75 Ω</strong>, following <strong>IEC 169-8</strong> regulations. On average, they have over <strong>500 connection cycles</strong>. Additionally, they are provided with <strong>PTFE insulation</strong> and can withstand temperatures between <strong>-65</strong> <strong>ºC</strong> and <strong>up to 165ºC</strong>.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://alfarsl.es/en/productsc/connector-rf/tnc-connector/">TNC Connectors</a></h3>



<p>This is another ideal option of industrial connectors for video surveillance systems. TNC Connectors <strong>operate through thread coupling</strong>, and they possess other characteristics that make them <strong>more durable and reliable</strong> than the BNC; they are in compliance with the <strong>IEC 169-17 regulation</strong>.</p>



<p>Their maximum frequency is 18 GHz (<strong>50 Ω</strong>) and 4 GHz (<strong>75</strong> <strong>Ω</strong>). They have a <strong>maximum power of 80 W</strong>, with a work voltage of <strong>500 VRMs</strong> and peaks of <strong>1500 VRMS</strong>. Furthermore, they have a <strong>durability</strong> of more than <strong>500 connection cycles </strong>and can withstand temperatures from <strong>-65ºC</strong> and up to <strong>165ºC</strong> <strong>.</strong></p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many of you are probably familiar with the components needed for a perfectly structured cabling system. It reaches a point where all the components must be arranged in a logical order and joined to form the system. In order to help with the process, in this post we are going to be talking about <a href="https://alfarsl.es/en/family/tools-for-connection/">connection tools</a> for stripping, crimping and mounting. And we are also going to explain in a little more detail the elements that are used and the proper way to use them.</p>
<h2>Connection tools</h2>
<h2>Stripping tools</h2>
<p>The appropriate tools for cable stripping need to have very specific characteristics:</p>
<ul>
<li>Easy to use and easy to upkeep.</li>
<li>Adjustable to different sections of the cable.</li>
<li>Must have cable stripping and cutting functions.</li>
</ul>
<p>This type of tools have been specifically designed to withstand pulling insulating material, the most difficult materials for stripping and cutting. Their blades must be able to pull any type of cable quickly, cleanly and with precision. Furthermore, it is recommended that they go through a self-adjustment process.</p>
<p>Stripping tools have been created to be used with ground wires, engine connections or sensor/actuator cables, Radio Frequency , power and High Speed digital signals&#8230; They are also used for both flexible or rigid/semi-rigid cables. We include in this group fixed and adjustable blades, as well as foam-dielectric emptying machines<span lang="en">.</span></p>
<h3>Crimping tools</h3>
<p>Crimping pliers are pieces that exert a lot of pressure, and they are used to tightly tighten splices of cables or electrical terminals and joins cable-connector. Their purpose is to prevent a cable from dislodging from the splice, and they can be used both with thin and thicker cables.</p>
<p>It is easy to use crimping tools. The only step is to introduce the wire inside ferrule, pin, terminal&#8230;. and press it. Once that is done, we have a connector perfectly and strongly attached to the wire that can only be removed by cutting.</p>
<p>There are different types of crimping tools both for male and female connectors. There are also plenty of dies that are interchangeable on the tip of tool to enable crimping a wide variety of cables. They are also used to connect pins and external conductors.<span lang="en"><br /></span></p>
<h3>Mounting tools</h3>
<p>These types of tools are very useful to facilitate the installation of connectors on your cables and on your panels. <span style="font-size: inherit;">Also, on many occasions, provision should be made for their disassembly. There are push tools for cables, panel cutters, screwdrivers with special tips &#8230; For straight connectors or with elbow termination. These tools take into account the degree of IP protection of the assembly allowing totally waterproof assemblies.</span></p>
<p>Finally, we must point out that the tools that are used for connecting wires must be of good quality in order to reduce the time it takes to prepare an installation.
