Solar panels are always installed outdoors, often under the most adverse weather conditions. They are subject to high temperature contrast, humidity, condensation, saltpetre, UV radiation and much more. For this reason, the requirements for their installation and maintenance are based on the need for reliability, durability, and the highest possible quality.
Connectors are a fundamental element in the correct functioning of the entire plant and all the following considerations must be taken into account.
A solar panel, as an electrical installation, can be connected in series, parallel or mixed circuits, depending on the requirements for each system and whether there is a need to increase voltage, intensity, or both.
Legal requirements for connectors following IEC62852:2014 and UL6703
- Configuration. Connectors must be polarized and configured in such a manner that they are not interchangeable with other contacts in the same system nor in other electrical systems within the same building.
- Protection. Connectors must be built in such a manner that they protect people from accidental contact with active parts.
- Secure system. Connectors must be either hitch or safety type. They cannot require tools for connecting, but tools must be needed for disconnecting them.
Types of connectors
Solar installations are very diverse. From a home setup to the big industrial or photovoltaic parks, each installation has its own requirements regarding voltage and intensity, ranging from dozens to several hundred amps. Each individual installation will need a certain type of connector according to its requirements.

In an installation where the voltage can be high, it is very important that all conductive elements be of suitable size. Due to the Joule effect, the kinetic energy lost by the electrons due to the electrical fields’ action is transformed into heat, and that requires a good design of both the cables’ section and their connectors.
